SUNSTAR Music Series 2012

SUNSTAR Music Series is on Fridays in March, during Women’s History Month. This series, inspired by our bi-annual SUNSTAR Music Festival, which is a 4-day event celebrating women artists with performances by local and national artists.

March 9 | $15
We are kicking off SUNSTAR with the original “Bollywood Barbie,” DJ Kalkutta. Based in NYC. The KST lobby will be turned into an energetic dance party following the powerful words and music of "Her Voices: Stories, Tales, and Myths of Women of Color". Her Voices is an art, poetry, and music show that is dedicated to reinterpreting the lives and myths of women of color through their voices and perspectives. Poets Yona Harvey, Christina Springer, and others perform against the sweet sounds of Brazilian jazz artist Kenia Ashby. Geña takes the party to the lobby to warm up the audience for a night of dancing with Global Beats and DJ Kalkutta.

March 23 | $10
We continue the SUNSTAR Series with a night of neo-soul and R&B performers. Joy Ike will be headlining the night by performing some of her new music. A recent write-up on NPR’s All Things Considered says “The depth of subjects she tackles in her poetic lyrics are perfectly complemented by a unique blend of neo-soul, with just the right dash of pop…a truly compelling act to watch in person, with the ability to create an intimate setting in locations big and small.” Other performers that night include music duo Soul Divine captivating audiences with they enchanting lyrics and positive vibrations; and the always-shining Bridgette Perdue.

March 30 | $10
We close our SUNSTAR Series with a night of local musicians and bands including DJ Mary Mack, Boca Chica, The Armadillos, and acclaimed Pittsburgh rocker Christiane D, who will perform songs from her new solo album “Obliquity of the Ecliptic.” Her album incorporates punk rock, hip-hop, rock and roll, and jazz influences.
